familiar to lakhs of BPO employees
working across India.
Sitting in a colorful cubicle in Gurgaon or Bangalore, ears
sandwiched between headphones, talking in a 'neutralised' accent to
people across the globe, solving their queries or trying to sell
some product-this is the common scene associated with a
BPO, also popularly called a Call
Centre.
There are about 300 such BPO companies
operating across India with its clients from US, UK and Australia,
and includes companies in IT, banking & finance, insurance,
healthcare, retail, telecommunication, etc.
Employees who work in India talk to the UK or US customers on a
daily, 8-hour shift basis. There shifts are usually at night time
due to time lag.
With its benefits of cheap labour and excellent communication
skills, many companies in the US and UK outsource their work to
business like India, China and Philippines. The growth prospects of
BPO industry are immense. Talking about
the scope of this industry to Careers 360, Raman Roy, Chairman and
MD of Quattro, says, "The appetite of BPO
industry is so huge that it can absorb another 1,00,000 people
overnight.
As of 2008, around 0.7 million people work in outsourcing
sector. Annual revenues are around $11 billion, around 1% of
GDP. Around 2.5 million people graduate
in India every year. Wages are rising by 10-15 percent as a result
of skill shortage.

Career Prospects: If you think that
BPO industry is all about calling, think
again. With so many processes and functions, the growth
opportunities in this field are vast. You get a lot of exposure and
you deal with international clients and industries.
A good call agent or customer care executive can move up the
ladder to become a team leader with his hard work and performance,
He can also move ahead to become project leader, project manager,
trainer, training manager, compliance, etc. You can also move into
other business of the same company.
Besides extra salaries, a BPO employee
gets benefits like free pick and drop, free meals, shopping
discounts, gymnasium, subsidies loans, etc.
