by Pritika Ghura

Hi! I am Robert Johnes. Am I speaking with Thomas Greens? I am calling on behalf of…" These words may sound familiar to lakhs of BPO employees working across India.

Sitting in a colorful cubicle in Gurgaon or Bangalore, ears sandwiched between headphones, talking in a 'neutralised' accent to people across the globe, solving their queries or trying to sell some product-this is the common scene associated with a BPO, also popularly called a Call Centre.

Employees who work in India talk to the UK or US customers on a daily, 8-hour shift basis. There shifts are usually at night time due to time lag.

With its benefits of cheap labour and excellent communication skills, many companies in the US and UK outsource their work to business like India, China and Philippines. The growth prospects of BPO industry are immense. Talking about the scope of this industry to Careers 360, Raman Roy, Chairman and MD of Quattro, says, "The appetite of BPO industry is so huge that it can absorb another 1,00,000 people overnight.

As of 2008, around 0.7 million people work in outsourcing sector. Annual revenues are around $11 billion, around 1% of GDP. Around 2.5 million people graduate in India every year. Wages are rising by 10-15 percent as a result of skill shortage.
